Chatral Rinpoche, Sangye Dorje (born in 1913) is a Dzogchen master in his mid-90s. He is a reclusive yogi known for his great realization and strict discipline. In Sanskrit the word Kailāśā means “crystal”. In Tibetan this mountain is named Gang Rinpoche that means “jewelry of snow”. In a tradition of Indian Jainism it is called Ashtapada.

Comparing to Indian yoga tradition that is being studied already for more than 100 years and is partly applied in the West, Tibetan yogic practices just started to be slightly revealed. Before the Chinese invasion Tibet was a secluded country, both due to its geographical position and local mentality, foreigners were not welcome here. In 1940s an Indian teacher of Hatha and Kundalini yoga sent his western disciple Theos Bernard to Tibet to perfect his knowledge. It took a lot of efforts for Theos “to gain confidence”. 

Commonly, yoga practitioners, as well as most people, start paying serious attention to their spine only after a visit to a radiotherapist. Mesmerized by the X-ray pictures of their necks, they quizzically palpate them and learn a lot of new and frightening expressions, like protrusion, spondylosis, osteochondrosis… Moreover, they start intimidating their mums, dads and pals with these words. Here are some simple measures that won’t let such cases to dilute your yogic serenity.
